NORRBOTNIABANAN BUREA-SODRA TUVAN

Norrbotniabanan, a new railway between Umeå and Luleå, is considered to create the conditions for a sustainable social development, increased competitiveness for business and a positive regional development that is positive for the entire country. The new railway will primarily strengthen freight traffic, but also enable passenger traffic between Norrland coastal cities. A new one coastal railway between Umeå and Luleå provides the opportunity for both heavier and longer trains. With the Norrbothnia line, companies' transport costs are estimated to be reduced by up to 30 percent.Such streamlining not only has an impact in the north but also in the rest of the country since more than half of the heavy goods traffic comes from the north with its destination in south.

Many of the raw materials that are transported from the north are processed in other parts of the country to some of our most profitable export products. The regional passenger traffic between Umeå, Skellefteå, Piteå and Luleå can be developed. Travel times can be halved. In 2015, the EU granted partial funding for railway plans for stage 1 (Umeå – Skellefteå) and for construction deed on the Umeå - Dåva section. The government has stated that they want to see construction start for Umeå -Dåva in 2018 and that railway plans for Dåva-Skellefteå should be ready in autumn 2019.
